Antonella Cinelli

The female universe, which has always been a privileged area in Antonella Cinelli’s artistic research and the point of origin of many of her works, offers interesting insights into the process of investigation of the contemporary woman and her modern representation.

Antonella Cinelli was born in Teramo in 1973. She graduated in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna in 1997. She is part of the artistic movement of the “New Italian figuration”.

The female universe, which has always been a privileged area in Antonella Cinelli’s artistic research and the point of origin of many of her works, offers interesting insights into the process of investigation of the contemporary woman and her modern representation. The decision to create works in which the more traditional way of understanding painting is well integrated with the new forms of installation of contemporary art, characterized by the use of poor and industrial materials, such as iron wires and led lights up to the use of brass powder, reflects the artist’s will both to tell the contradictions of today’s woman and to create a truthful image. It is a work played on contrasts and oppositions.
Her exhibition career began in 1993 and among the various exhibitions we mention those at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, at the Mazzucchelli Museum in Brescia, at the Marino Marini Museum in Florence, at the Aurum in Pescara, at the Fattori Museum in Livorno and at Palazzo Ducale a Genoa. Her works are present in various public and private collections including: the Vittoriale degli Italiani Foundation in Gardone di Riviera, the Carisbo Foundation in Bologna, the Vignato Foundation in Vicenza, the Civic Museum in Vasto, the MUSA Museum in Saló and the Fabbri Foundation in Bologna.
In 2006 she won the first prize for painting in the national competition Premio Celeste and in 2011 she was invited to exhibit at the 54th Venice Biennale in the Italy Abruzzo pavilion. With the Fu Xin Gallery in Shanghai she began an international exhibition journey by participating in exhibitions and art fairs both in China and in the USA and she currently works with art galleries in Canada and Sweden. She is the creator and artistic director of FIGURABILIA, the iconic art festival in Bologna.
The collaboration with the Biale Cerruti Art Gallery began in 2006 on the occasion of the group show “Il Falò delle Vanità”, curated by Irina Biale. Subsequently her works are included in the project of the collective exhibition “Coffee Break”. In 2008 her personal exhibition “Femminile, singolare…concreto” was presented in Siena. She participates with the Biale Cerruti Art Gallery in the international contemporary Affordable Art Fair in Brussels.
From 2021 she began her academic career as a teacher of the Painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania and in 2022 she was assigned the chair of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence.
